The Brigham City Harvest of Faith Celebration Pt. 1

OK...this is a photo heavy post so I'll explain a little bit but mostly we 're just gonna truck along.

 

Grey agreed to participate in the Cultural Celebration held for the opening of our new temple. He agreed to preform in the choir. There were 4000 kids in the hour and a half long program. We were lucky enough to score tickets for our whole family (including my mom) thanks to Tina Howard. Thanks, Tina!! We arrived at 5:30 and it started at 6:30 but we still barely got a seat. As it was, we were at the bottom of the bleachers so the photos don't do the program justice.

 

 

They asked people from around the new temple district to paint a tile for a mural.

 

Elder Nelson and Elder Perry were the VIP's for the program. You could tell they were excited to be there and see this group of kids dance and sing.

 

The program narrator talked about how we are reaping the harvest planted by the generations of people in the area before us. The first group was the Shoshoni Indians.

 





Next came the early Danish settlers and then a wave of Welsh settlers. Some areas in Utah have the highest percentages of Welsh decendents outside of Wales.

 



 

Next were the Hispanics and then the Pioneers from everywhere else.

 

Then they started talking about the development of Brigham City itself.

 

Some of the old photos were awesome!

 

 

Many of these old buildings can still be found around town. The building below is the school that originally sat on the block that the temple now occupies. It was torn down several years before we moved to Utah.

 

Next came the train!

Workers from Asia came from California and immigrants from other areas met up in Utah to join the East and West coasts.

Erin's New Haircut!

Erin was tired of the upkeep longer hair requires so she asked if we could cut it off again.

First Day of School 2012

We started school on August 27, 2012. It was the first year for the Promontory School of Expeditionary Learning. The kids are required to wear uniforms. Grey is in 7th grade, Lance in 4th grade and Erin in 1st. We (meaning Chad and Me) are very excited to see how this new school compares to the old ones.

 

 

I think I shall try to recreate this picture each year to see how the kids and the tree grows. We'll see!

 

 



Our Temple Tour

On August 23, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. the Koyle family attended one of the open houses for the new Brigham City Temple. We parked out at the Autoliv parking area and rode the fancy french buses to the temple. (I took these photos with my phone so bear with me.)

 

 

We were dropped off at the back of the temple and proceeded to the underground parking area. They had false walls set up into several rooms. Each room had a TV and sound system set up to show a brief movie about temples (in general) and the history of Brigham City and the land and history for this temple.  From there we were moved along through the temple...all the way up one side and back down the other. They said they had 24,600 visitors that day. It was a little on the crowded side.

 

 

It was beyond beautiful and themed with peach blossoms. The round windows are cut glass peach blossoms and the carpets are carved with blossoms too. At the end of the tour we were let out into another room in the parking garage with water and cookies. Then we went out to the front and took some pictures there.

 

 

It was a fun family adventure and something we'll remember for a long time.



Tour of Utah

 

Each year for the past 2 years Chad and Lance have gone to watch the Tour of Utah bicycle race. This year was no exception. They went over a couple of days. They watched the race at the start then moved to a new spot, then a new spot, back to the old spot, and then back to the finish (back at the start). There were some fun activities for Lance (like rock climbing) and free hats and food. This has become a great tradition for Lance and Chad and they have so much fun!

 

 

The riders and car drivers (from the support cars) started to recognize them because they were all over the place and often the only people at odd intervals of the race. They collected several water bottles from the riders. They attended a leg of the road race and the time trial held at the Miller Motorsports Speedway.

 

 

 

 



Promontory Ribbon Cutting

On August 11, 2012 we attended the Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the Promontory School of Expeditionary Learning. Erin had volunteered to participate in the choir for the event. Grandma and Christina were there as well. They had not been able to lay sod yet and there were still some things inside to be finished but overall the school looked great.

 

 

Erin did a FANTASTIC job learning and singing her songs.

 

During the program they talked about the family that sold their farm to the school and Boyd B. White who's legacy this building would be. The plaque reads:

"Let our students be inspired to explore and discover these school grounds, built on his family farm. May they serve their community and country as honorably and faithfully as he did."

 

 

Then they drew a random kids' name out of a fishbowl and that kid got to help cut the ribbon!

 

 

We got to walk through the building with kids from each grade acting as tour guides. I didn't get pictures of the inside that were any good but we got excited for the new school year!
